When I first came to Madagascar in 2004, my plan was to open a restaurant, but I have recognised very quickly the countries real potential: Gemstones! My absolute childhood passion. Since then, I have bought, cut and sold thousands of stones and I became an absolute expert in the gemstone trade with an eagle eye for hues and colours. My second passion is jewelry and in 2005 I have set up Madagascars biggest jewellery factory (at that time) supplying some of the biggest French distributors. I was lucky to meet the french Jewellery Master Gerard Courcoux called Gege, who runs a jewellery factory in Bangkoks beautiful and vibrating Gem district near Silom. He has taken me for apprentice and has teached me all the secrets of the art. Today I design most of Morebellis Jewels, I take care of the whole jewelry production line and I am managing the company.
Today , Giuseppe and I are proud to announce the opening of a second Morebelli shop in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Giuseppe Pocobelli
I have started this adventure walking in my fathers footsteps who came to Madagascar in 1996. After leaving the laboratory-like GIA classroom with my Graduate Gemologist in the pocket I have plunged to the dusty reality of the red island bush and mining sites. What a contrast. Since then I have spent most of my time traveling throughout the whole island and sincerely, I have seen all the places. Until now, everybody knows‚ Pepi‘ and wherever I go I will meet old friends and colleagues. These friendships and relationships that I have built since so many years have become the foundation for our sourcing today.
When buying the rough, I have already my idea of what the finished stone should look like. That is why I do most of the performing of the stones together with our expert cutters. All of our inventory has gone through my fingers and I have checked every little precious gem with a loup and a light and believe me, some of them gave me a serious headache.
Of course my passion is also mining itself and I will not stop to try my good luck digging holes with friends and colleagues a little bit everywhere around the island prospecting for new gem deposits.
There are many gem producing countries but have you ever seen a country that can offer all the gemstones? And furthermore, most of the gems that are found in Madagascar belong to the best and most beautiful of its category. We are lucky that we were able to discover all of the major gem producing areas in Madagascar during our more then 20 year long experience. Our sourcing today is the fruit of the human friend-, and relationships that we have established in all these years. We target a very close partnership with villagers, sponsoring their work on their permits or lands in order to have the right of the first sight and giving us the chance to be the first to bet on the best parcels. Of course we always help our friends sharing knowledge about geology, technology, paperwork or simply with a good doctor if they have health issues. |
Morebelli is working exclusively with gemstones from Madagascar and all the stones on this homepage are cut by our staff in Antananarivo in our factory. All our stones are natural, untreated unless it is specified in the comment and description of the gem. We do the best we can to offer you beautifully shaped and facetted fine gems, with excellent clarity, polishing and proportions. |
We are trained Graduate Gemologists (GIA GG) with over 20 years of experience in buying, preforming, cutting and selling gemstones. Of course we are eternal apprentices and always seek to improve the quality of our gems. The better we get, the more we focus on each detail of the gem. |
This homepage is our brand new sales tool and is complementary to the trade shows that we attend each year. Usually we attend the Hong Kong March and September shows. If you don’t know us personally yet, please feel free to contact us and inquire about any stone you are interested in. |

Values & Vision
MADE IN MADAGASCAR
Morebelli’s ambition is to finally make Madagascar shine on the international gem and jewellery scene. We owe all what we have, not only to our hard labour and perseverance, but first of all to this beautiful island and its dreamy treasures. This country has it all, but still its reputation is lacking importance and it is Giuseppe’s and Aurelien’s highest desire to make this change.
We don’t know of many countries that produce such a variety of gemstones. Most of the gems that have been unearthed from Madagascars soil belong to the finest qualities available in the world. Rubies from Didy, Kashmir-like sapphires from Bemainty, emeralds from Mananjary (Exceptional Emerald), Santa Maria Aquamarine from Manankana, Rubellite from Anjanabonoina, Lagoon tourmaline from Betafo, blue color change garnets from Bekily (first discovered in Madagascar in the 1990’s) and demantoid garnets from Antetezambato producing some of the finest gem materials.
Still Morebelli is the only company listed in the Hong Kong Show register being from Madagascar.
Sapphires from Madagascar have the least reputation and prices are lower than same quality sapphires from Sri Lanka, Burma or Kashmir.
Our vision is that gems from Madagascar will be recognised to their right value by building up a local gem industry. If we teach to the already very talented cutters the market standards we hope to stop the leak of rough material from this country being then sold as stones from other sources for higher prices.
Social Responsability
We create employment, and all our employees and co-workers benefits from very good salaries plus bonuses, health insurance and pensions. By exporting cut stones, the government will cash in 10 times more money than by exporting rough stones. Morebelli is Madagascars top exporter for cut and polished gemstones. Every export is officially declared and we pay mining taxes to the government for the stones you are buying. These funds will then be redistributed to the local communities and the regions.
With our more than 20 year long experience in Madagascar, Morebelli has established a plan, how to reorganise the gem and small scale mining business in Madagascar and we are ready to share it with the government and share our advice and opinion. With these ressources and its top labour, it is absolutely feasible to transform the almost abandoned gem business in Madagascar to a top industry sector and a real motor of Madagascars development.
